5/8/13

Today, my group and I (we are responsible for mapping the stream next to the school for future reference) measured the depth of the stream, as well as assessing the stream quality. We analyzed and assessed the stream by measuring the canopy, types of organisms preset, turbidity, and more going by the HHEI form, which tests for water quality and assess the overall condition of the water in the area. We measured from the start of the stream (bridge) to 200 feet downstream.

Since today we did not have a water assessment kit of any kind with us, tomorrow we are planning on bringing such a kit in order to test the water for multiple qualities, such as definite turbidity, pH levels, and dissolved oxygen. However, from what we could see, the stream was extremely overrun with man-made and recyclable objects such as plastic, paper, and the like. Along the way, many, many shopping carts were spotted at various locations and groups throughout the stream, as well as innumerable plastic buckets and plastic bags, and even a few styrofoam plates amongst other objects.

Below are some visual examples of the toxicity and condition of the stream. This part of the stream is what had stretched around to the back of the school and past it.

  1. Hey Lorenzo! Love the picture you posted! I think the descriptions you gave for what you did today we're also pretty great. Just a quick suggestion, I was a little confused in the first sentence of your post. I might suggest that you move the explanation in the parentheses to the end of the sentence rather than in the middle of it. One more thing that you might want to do, I think adding descriptions to each of your pictures would really increase help your readers get a sense of where you are and what you're doing.

  2. This project is really important for our report to the OEPA. The pollution and litter are awful. Are you all cleaning that up or just studying it? Is there anything dangerous in the water? I know we found a few leeches...Good luck!

  3. Wow, I'm impressed by the level of detail and great photos to accompany your writing! I didn't really know what your group was doing before I read this, and now I feel like I have a pretty good idea. Maybe in the future you could consider captioning your photos. That really is the only thing i can nitpick about on this post though. Great job!

  5. Nice work!I really like your explanation of what you did. If you wanted to, you could dedicate a paragraph to the description of your group instead of a side note. I don't see anything actually wrong with your post though, so great job!

  6. Nice job! I do like the explanation of what you did because it was short and, detailed enough to where anyone who read it could get a sense of where you were. I do agree with Bret that I don't see anything wrong with the post since it has the photos and details that you needed. (Keep it up!)
